Creating Slime

Posted: 02/01/07

My sons and I created slime using one of the Seven Easy Preschool Chemical Reactions
First I combined equal amounts of glue and water and stirred it well. If you’re going to add food coloring, add it to this step.
Then I dissolved two tablespoons of borax (in your laundry section of your grocery store—it’s cheap!) in about a cup of warm water. I stirred until the Borax was completely dissolved.
Finally I mixed a few tablespoons of the Borax solution with the glue solution. The reaction was quick and formed slime very easily.
Picture Copyright Theresa HalvorsenThis is a really fun preschool science experiment to mess around with. See what happens when you add more water and less glue to the mixture. You can also try to add more borax solution to the glue solution. Doing this will create slime with different textures. Some of the slime will be harder and according to my sons, have the consistency of scrabbled eggs. But some of the slime will be goopy and gooey and lots of fun for your preschooler to run through their fingers.

This is a messy experiment, especially if you’ve added food coloring. However, it’s also a great experiment to teach your preschooler that amounts of ingredients in chemical experiments really matter.
Have fun with this preschool chemical reaction everyone!
