Well it’s raining here in Sacramento and my sons and I are stuck in the house. While cleaning, we came across a DVD of Stomp Out Loud
. Ever heard of Stomp? They’re dancers and musicians who choreographed banging on junk-yard metal, sweeping brooms, and stomping their feet into a visual and musical performance. After watching it, my sons are, of course, swinging brooms around in the air and banging on everything they can. But it got me thinking about sound and preschoolers.

How many things in your house make a different sound because of what they’re made out of, how thick they are and what they contain? An empty plastic container makes a very different sound than a full one. And a Tupperware container makes a different sound that a metal bowl. See what happens if you give your preschooler a wooden spoon and let them bang away (with supervision) on safe things like kitchen items, furniture, carpeting, maybe a tightly stretched blanket Tupperware and anything else you can think of. Explain to your preschooler why different things make different sounds and if your rhythm is good, try to make some music.
