It's the first day of my sons' winter vacation and we spent the day making cut-out cookies. I was struck by how much science and nature teaching I could do in just that little activity. They watched me separate egg whites from the yolk which led to questions about eggs and then to baby chickens. When I made the icing for the cookies, I had to beat the sugar mixture in a bowl while over boiling water, leading to a discussion about how heat can change a liquid into something more solid. And when we combined food coloring colors to ice the cookies, they learned to combine red and yellow to make orange and red and blue to make purple (we have some interesting-looking cookies!)
